THE WINTER CONCERT 2008

The Congratulations to all of our students who performed in the Winter Concert at Erasmus School. It was a fantastic experience for us to witness the amazing efforts, courage and wizardry of you all. There are simply too many concert highlights to single a few out. But I’m sure everyone enjoyed the raucous laughter and shear delight of seeing people perform in such a generous way. Thanks to Terry Hardingham and Michael Moreno for providing some video footage of the concert. If you are interested in seeing the performances click here. We look forward to our next concert closer to Christmas.

THE AMAZING INVENTION OF PETER HOBBS

Peter Hobbs is no ordinary student. Peter (of retiring age) has only had a handlful of lessons with MMT (less than a term) and, like a few of our piano students, doesn't own a full size keyboard/piano as yet. Now, although having a smaller sized keyboard for practise at home is better than nothing at all, it can lead to some frustration when students progress into pieces that use notes at the bottom end and top end of the piano... WELL, NOT FOR PETER!

I think in all the time I have been teaching (a long time!) I don't think I have ever witnessed a more innovative solution to the "small keyboard practise problem" mentioned above. So in the words of Peter himself...

"As promised please find attached photos of my new, go-anywhere, low-cost (i.e. next-to-nothing) keyboard extension for a 61 key electronic keyboard. It has taken me just 4 weeks at MMT to realise there just aren't enough notes on my keyboard and something needed to be done. I thought of writing to Kevin Rudd to bring it up at the 2020 "chatter-fest" but I couldn't even get Cate Blanchett to take on my cause - so much for more money for the 'yarts'. The manufacture was relatively simple once I had constructed the exact dimensions of the keys on my p.c. and printed it out on the laser printer.

The manufacture of the 'device' required a bit more effort as it involved and old cardboard box I had in the garage, some glue and a roll of wide packing tape. As yet I have still not worked out the way to make it actually play as I'm not enough of an electronic geek to achieve this. So in the manner of a kazooh I make the noise with my mouth which I think that any particular note will play. As I am concentrating really hard on trying to read the manuscript, get my fingering right and get the time correct, I'm afraid that almost everything comes out in a sort of strangled "Gnuugh".

Squeeze your nostrils together and make a noise from the back of your throat and you'll sort of get the idea. In retrospect I think it sounds like the Wookie from Star Wars. I will be glad to help anyone wanting to construct a similar device for their own use. They merely need to bring along a cardboard box (thick cardboard preferred) and some clear sticky tape and we'll see what we can do."
