I am a total beginner and am nervous about starting.
This is TOTALLY normal. We guarantee that when you have had a lesson or two with us that these feelings will subside if not totally disappear. Because most of our lessons are run in groups, everyone gets to share and observe the experiences of other students. This reduces the anxiety levels enormously and also means that you accelerate through watching others learning music.
What are the ages of the people you teach?
We teach people of ALL ages: whether the student is newborn, 5 months, 5 years, 25, 55, or 95, we have a structured and effective programme for you.
I am an older person and don’t want to be patronised or treated like a child. How do you deal with people like me?
Welcome. Don’t be worried about EVER being patronised at My Music Tutor®. Our teaching method combined with our empathy for our students allows you to learn sophisticated pieces of music straight away. You will be amazed by how quickly you learn with the number and quality of great pieces you play.
Do you have a teaching method?
Yes we do. The My Music Tutor® System™ has been developed in Australia over the last twenty years as a revolutionary method for learning how to play, read and compose music.
For children aged newborn to 5 years old we have partnered with Kindermusik® to provide an effective learning program. Kindermusik® is the most respected and recognised music learning system for this age group anywhere in the world.
Do you teach people how to read music?
Yes. We believe that we have THE most effective method for reading music in the world! Most people find reading music a mystery: we make it as easy as ABC. Students typically learn 10 times faster than with conventional lessons.
Do you teach using normal written music, or do you use special music that only My Music Tutor® students can understand?
We teach you how to read REAL music that is ubiquitous and all around us. We want to provide our students with the necessary skills to be able read normal music, so that our students can access the massive array of published music from Beethoven to the Beatles and beyond.
How many lessons do I need to improve?
Only one! You will learn whole pieces of music that are really enjoyable right from the start.
I have been taught a specialist system for reading music. Will this prevent me from learning your method?
No, we have never encountered a student who couldn’t learn using our method. We teach you how to read the same music that a professional musician would use. Some teachers use a method that has numbers, arrows and other symbols as a means to read music; this has very limited value when it comes to reading normal music as music shops don't hold this kind of music for the general public.
Yes we do. We have our own music publications that are used in conjunction with the teaching program. In addition, we offer AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board) publications and other ancillary volumes.
Do people get to play popular songs or songs they want to play?
Absolutely. We want people to be able to play the music that they love. In conjunction, we have a library of pieces that serve as inspiration for students at their particular stage.
Do you teach in groups and one-on-one?
How do the group lessons work?
Our unique group structure allows students to enjoy rapid learning whilst performing in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere; private lessons are a one-to-one engagement and are designed for the more advanced student, or for someone who has a very specific requirement that may fall outside of our teaching program.
Do you teach the theory of music as well?
Yes we do. In fact, you will learn more about HOW music is put together than almost any other school you would attend. We love to show our students the logical and common sense nature of music through our program.
I have learnt an instrument before. Will I need to relearn another way with you?
No you won’t. Our philosophy is that “nothing is wasted”. We have a lot of students coming from Suzuki and Yamaha teachers. They are able to take the best from what they have learnt and make it even better when combined with our method.
Can I learn more than one instrument?
Absolutely. In fact, everyone gets to learn the keyboard in addition to their instrument of choice as a bonus. The piano is used as a primary teaching instrument for understanding the theory of music. The keyboard is the most logical instrument to demonstrate basic musical principles from.
Do you sell instruments at the studio?
Not at present but we plan to hire and sell instruments from our studios into the future. However, we often have various instruments for sale on behalf of our students.
What kinds of instruments can I learn?
There are very few instruments that we don’t cater to at My Music Tutor®. However, we specialise in keyboard, piano, guitar, voice and bass guitar.
Do you cater for people wanting to sit examinations?
Absolutely. Students typically pass examinations with high marks whilst not letting the exam process interfere with their overall music making. We show the students how they can enjoy preparing for an exam. We present the material in a way that encourages them to understand how exams work and why people do them. This approach has students gradually being able to do the bulk of their preparation for future exams without assistance from their teacher.
What do you think of the AMEB?
My Music Tutor® has a healthy regard for music examinations. The AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) is highly regarded by many educational institutions throughout Australia.
Do you have concerts for your students?
Yes, we run a number of concerts each year. We encourage all of our students to share their progress with friends, family and other students. We make sure that it is always a fun-filled affair conducted in a beautiful venue.
